Watchmen è il titolo di un'opera a fumetti scritta nel 1986 dall'autore britannico Alan Moore e disegnata dal suo connazionale Dave Gibbons. Narra il crepuscolo patetico e miserrimo di un gruppo di supereroi in costume, la loro rivalsa, il loro pensionamento. La vicenda è ambientata di un mondo non molto dissimile dal nostro, una realtà parallela che sembra si sia separata dalla nostra proprio con l'avvento degli eroi in costume degli anni cinquanta. La storia narra di eroi da fumetto diversi da quelli conosciuti fino ad allora: secchioni troppo cresciuti, squilibrati da manicomio, omosessuali non dichiarati, criminali stupratori, pazzi visionari, esseri divini senza umanità , oche senza cervello, ubriaconi e imbecilli al punto di farsi uccidere da un criminale per un mantello incastrato nella porta girevole. I temi spaziano dal concetto di divinità e di tempo, al Superuomo, a pirati, guerra fredda, con un machiavellico complotto da scienziato di film di serie B che per una volta riesce in pieno. Watchmen si staglia sull'arte del fumetto in maniera nitida. Alcuni ritengono che il fumetto, almeno quello supereroistico, si divida in opere che non sono state influenzate da Watchmen, ovvero quelle scritte prima, e quelle che lo sono state, quelle scritte dopo.
